Webelos Trail Camera Project
In the Fall of 2026 our Webelos Den got together to construct trail cameras out of inexpensive Raspberry Pis. They unboxed the Raspberry Pi and camera, assembled the hardware, and then walked through 5 successively more involved Python programs until the final state of a camera that takes pictures in a loop and does rudimentary image analysis to only save pictures when there is sufficient motion between two frames. They built their own enclosures and stands, camouflaged them, and helped deploy them in their yards for testing and then at our campsite.
All of the code for this project is available on GitHub and most of the captured animals are shared on iNaturalist.
